ABSTRACT

Poverty alleviation was measured by computing change in income, change in food consumption and change in housing environment of the respondents after their involvement with TMSS (Thengamara  Mohila Sabuj Sangha) activities. Data were collected from a sample of randomly selected 107 rural women from a total of 823 from TMSS in Chirirbandar upazila under Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. Simple and direct questions with different scales were used to obtained information. Person’s Product Moment Co-efficient of Correlation (r) was computed in order to explore relationship between the concerned variables and comparative change was measured by “t” test. Findings indicate that the incomes, food consumption and housing environment of the respondents increased significantly due to participation with TMSS activities. The average yearly income of the respondents increased to Tk. 22.23 thousand from Tk. 19.04 thousand, the average per capita per day caloric intake was increased to K. cal 2260.96 from K. cal from 2094.15 and average housing environment score of the respondents was 37.52 after becoming member compared to 32.15 before membership. The farm size and yearly saving of the respondents had significant positive relationship and age of the respondents had negatively significant relationship with their change income. Age, education, credit received and duration of involvement with TMSS had significant positive relationship with their change in food consumption. Education, yearly savings, credit received and duration of involvement with TMSS had significant positive relationship with their change in housing environment. However, family size of the respondents did not show any significant relationship with their change in income, change in food consumption and change in housing environment. The inadequate supply of credit facilities against their demand as identified by the respondent as the main problem.
