 ABSTRACT

The study was conducted at the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh to identify and analyze the relative profitability, factors affecting on Gerbera cultivation, problems and constraints faced by the farmers. The samples were collected frome two villages namely Gadkhali and Panisara in Godkhali Union at Jhikargachha Upazila under Jashore District of Bangladesh. After analyzing the data, per hectare total cost, gross return, gross margin and net return were Tk¡. 555062.4, Tk. 1920042, Tk. 878362.2 and Tk. 1364980 respectively. Gerbera production was highly profitable in the study area. On the variable cost and full cost basis, the benefit cost ratios are 3.95 and 3.46 respectively. Cobb-Douglas production function is used to find out the variables which are significant impact on profitability. Human labor, seedling, urea, zinc sulphate and irrigation in the gerbera production function were significant in explaining the yield (stick per ha). The coefficient with expected sign indicates the selected inputs contribute positively to the yield. A return to scale was 1.02. Natural calamities, lack of technical knowledge, lack of cold storage and inadequate credit facilities were major issues in gerbera cultivation. Therefore, the government should take the necessary measures to address these issues.

Keywords: Gerbera cultivation, Profitability, BCR and Cobb-Douglas production function.
