ABSTRACT
The study was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Research and Training on Applied Nutrition, Dhaka, Bangladesh during 2000-2001 fiscal year to investigating the birth weight of the new born babies in a typical rural area of Bangladesh. The samples were collected from four villages namely Haripasha, Ruiya, Defulia and Char Kowa sadar upazila under Barisal district of Bangladesh. A total no. of 52 healthy pregnant women was purposively selected with equal socioeconomic condition. They are categorized into two groups. One was exposed group and the other was non-exposed group. Equal pregnant mother with same age group were under taken in each study group. The study suggested that maternal nutritional counseling affects baby’s birth weight. Such research studies need to be undertaken to detect the causes of low birth weight of new born babies in the rural area of our country in order to design an appropriate strategy for avoiding low birth weight of new born babies.
