 ABSTRACT

The experiment was conducted at Agronomy Field, Department of Agronomy, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, Bangladesh during 2014-2015 to evaluate the seed quality of black gram (Vigna mungo L.)  stored in different containers (aluminum tin, polythene bag and cloth bag). Immediately after collection of seeds from Agronomy Department of BSMRAU, initial quality of black gram seeds was assessed in the laboratory. After initial quality assessment seeds were kept in different containers to observe the deterioration pattern. Among the three containers, seeds of cloth bag absorbed more moisture from surrounding atmosphere. The initial moisture content was 10.50%, 10.50 % and 10.50 % of aluminum tin, polythene bag and cloth bag respectively. The moisture content increased with advanced of storage period. But the increasing rate was higher in the seeds of cloth bag compared than other container. The initial germination percentage of seeds in metal container, polythene bag and cloth bag were 97.50 %, 93.50% and 96.10% respectively but after storage it was declined. The deterioration rate (14.77%) was also highest in seeds of cloth bag. The shoot and root length and dry matter weight of seedling were lowest at the end of storage in cloth bag and the lowest seedling vigor.
