ABSTRACT
These two terms, ‘Culture’ and ‘Intercultural communicative competence’ are now prominent in the realm of second and foreign language teaching. As a language, English is enjoying the unquestioned supremacy over other languages for centuries. It is now considered as the most important medium of communication of the present global world. Its great acceptability and popularity supports that position. But today’s world is a world of communication also and learners of this time need to be well aware of the mode of communication in the international settings. Knowledge about different cultures who speak English and the competence to communicate cross culturally is a prerequisite for that. Intercultural communicative competence, in fact, helps learners communicate globally with cultural appropriateness. This paper examines the position and influence of culture and intercultural communicative competence in English Language Teaching and also examines their interrelationship and inevitability in the context of Bangladesh.
